S-E picks up 9th win of season

OXFORD – The Lady Blackhawks of Oxford used a big second quarter to build a 13 point lead by halftime in their 42-35 win over Midstate Athletic Conference opponent Harpursville Tuesday night.
Oxford made the extra pass several times in the contest, finding the open player who in return knocked down the open jumper or finished the fast break layup. The sharing of the ball is what jumpstarted the second quarter run by the Blackhawks as they went on to out scoring the visiting Lady Hornets 17-5.
Three assists were recorded in the first minute and half of the second as Madalyn Barrows hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Ellie Ryan hit one from behind the 3-point arc for Oxford’s 9-0 run.
A few minutes later, Barrows and Ryan exchanged assists on fast break plays. Barrows came down with a rebound on the defensive end of the floor and took it in for a layup with Ryan trailing. Instead of taking the contest two-footer, Barrows dumped it to Ryan who then put the bucket in for two points.
The next play, Ryan came away with a steal and returned the favor to give Barrows the basket.
Ryan and Barrows combined for nine assists in the contest as they also led the scoring column. Ryan ended the night with 13 points and four assists while Barrows tallied 13 points, five assists and eight rebounds.
Harpursville cut the deficit down to one point after the third quarter and outscored the Blackhawks in the fourth, 12-7 but it wasn’t enough to finish the comeback.
The Hornets were led by MJ Kappauf’s 11 and MacKenzie Robertson’s 10 points in the loss. Kappauf scored six of her 11 in the first half while Robertson put up eight points to pace Harpursville early in the contest.
Caitlyn Quigley was one point and one rebound shy of a double-double, finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Friday night, the Lady Blackhawks fell to the Unatego Spartans, 52-19.
The Spartans controlled the game from start to finish as they scored 13 in each of the first two quarters for the 26-11 lead.
Oxford was held to four points in both the third and fourth quarters as Unatego again scored double figures in the same time frame.
Hali Lucia made both of Unatego’s 3-pointers made in the contest, counting for six of her game-high 12 points. Meghan Perry matched her teammate’s total to record a double-double – finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Caitlin Quigley led Oxford in the loss, pouring in 10 points. Karley Miller and Barrows each added four points.
